Tonight – April 20, 2022, The Greek Theater in Los Angeles would be hosting a Sold Out performance by the Deftones. The show was originally scheduled for August of 2020 then due to covid it was rescheduled to November 2021. Then once again it was pushed back due to the pandemic related uncertainly, but finally tonight it was a go. The Deftones and Gojira were ready to perform for the eager Los Angeles crowd, and we were excited to cover it!

Lots of LA traffic, but we finally made it there just in time to see Gorjira take the stage. If you are not familiar with Gorjira, they are a French heavy metal band from Ondres. Founded in 1996 as Godzilla, then changed the name to Gorjira in 2001. The band is comprised of brothers Joe (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and Mario Duplantier (drums), Christian Andreu (lead guitar), and Jean-Michel Labadie (bass). Tonight, they took the stage to a welcoming crowd as they got their set started with “Born for One Thing.” From there they went right into “Backbone” and “Stranded.” Their crushing set was well received by the crowd as they also played other fan favorites like “Flying Whales,” “Silvera,” “Grind,” and “Another World.” Their energetic set unfortunately came to an end as they closed the night out with “Amazonia.” A very powerful performance that took the Greek Theater by storm. We definitely hope to have them back again soon!

It was finally time for the Deftones to take the stage. This was a very anticipated performance due to all the postponements from the pandemic. The lineup for the Deftones includes founding members Chino Moreno (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Stephen Carpenter (lead guitar), Abe Cunningham (drums) along with Frank Delgado (keyboards, turntables, samples), newly announced Fred Sablan (tour bassist) and also secondary guitarist Lance Jackman. The band got things started with “Genesis” which is the title track to their latest release Ohms. From there they went on to play a good mix of fan favorites like “Prayers/Triangles,” “Knife Prty,” “Digital Bath” and “Change (in the House of Flies).” The Sold Out crowd was singing along to all the songs as the band roared through their monstrous set. It was evident that Chino and the rest of the band were glad to be back on stage together after such a long break. It was also apparent that Los Angeles needed their dose of the Deftones. All good things must come to an end as the band concluded their set with the song “Lovers.” A perfect way to end the evening!

Their tour continues through the middle of May. You can check tour dates on their website. Thanks to both Gojira and the Deftones for making this such a memorable event.
