Halloween came early to San Diego this year as The 69 Eyes and Wednesday 13 were in town as part of the “Hell Has No Mercy 2020” tour. Go Venue was there to cover this spooky duo at one of our favorite venues, Brick by Brick. The 69 Eyes are a Gothic rock band from Finland. Their sound is a mix of the gloominess of Gothic rock and guitar-powered rock ‘n’ roll. The Helsinki vampires released their 12th studio album, West End, in September 2019 on Nuclear Blast Records. In 2019, they also began their first US tour since 2009 in support of the new album. Tonight, San Diego had the privilege of hosting them and we were thrilled to cover the show!

First to take the stage was the duke of spook, Wednesday 13. The horror punk kingpin and former-Murderdolls frontman brought his touch of Halloween horror to San Diego. Him and his crew of ghouls got things started with “Necrophaze” which is the title track off their latest album released September 2019 on Nuclear Blast. They went on to play fan favorites like “Zodiac,” “I Want You…Dead,” “Scream Baby Scream,” “Serpent Society,” and “What the Night Brings.” This was a high energy set of creepy shock rock that at times made it seem like you were watching a 3d horror movie. Alice Cooper would be proud. Wednesday 13 doesn’t bite, but they definitely left their mark tonight!

Next it was time for The 69 Eyes. The Helsinki vampires took the stage in all black with a few members wearing their ghoulish skeleton leather jackets. Brick by Brick was completely packed as the band took the stage and got their set started with “Two Horns Up” which is from their latest release, West End. They played a crushing set that included songs like “Never Say Die,” “Black Orchid,” “Hell Has No Mercy,” “Wasting The Dawn,” and “27 & Done” among others.

Front man and vocalist, Jyrki 69, towers the stage with his bone style leather jacket and gloves while the band rips though both new and older classics form their catalog. The crowd of devoted fans sang along to all their songs. That was quite the response for a band that hadn’t been to the US in over 10 years. The 69 Eyes ended going through a 14 songs set-list and concluded the night with a 3 song encore which included “Framed In Blood,” “Dance D’Amour,” and “Lost Boys.” A perfect way to end the night.

A big thanks to The 69 Eyes and Wednesday 13 for coming to town. Catch them if you can as the tour currently runs through February 22 ending in Reading, PA.  See set-list and photos from tonight’s event below!
