Seether and Skillet stopped in to Kansas City’s Midland Theatre on October 2, 2024, with their co-headlining tour. Tim Montana and Royale Lynn were direct support for the evening. The Midland is a beautiful historic circa 1927 theatre located in the heart of the Kansas City’s Power and Light District. With its ornate woodwork, elegant stain glass and chandelier, I had to chuckle at the thought of a bunch of rowdy metal heads soon filling the venue for a hard rock show.

Royale Lynn worked through a seven song setlist, while talking about the importance of good mental health, she encouraged everyone to live their dream even though it might be doing something different. Royale Lynn also talked about growing up in the country, taking a 45-minute bus ride to school every day, and how Evanescence and Fly Leaf inspired her. She dedicated the song Black Magic to Evanescence and performed a cover of Fly Leaf’s “All Around Me”. She finished the set with her two biggest songs, “Death Wish” and “Six Feet Deep”.

Tim Montana’s sound falls squarely in the southern rock genre. They leaned on the heavier side of the spectrum with their first couple songs, “Get You Some” and “Ain’t Coming Down”. Each of the seven songs played came off their newly released album Savage. “Savage” and “Devil You Know” were most familiar to me as they’re on Sirius XM Octane with fairly heavy rotation.

Skillet was next on stage. It’d been quite a while since I’d seen them and was really excited about the show. I’ve seen photos and footage of their set, and it looked fantastic, and they did not disappoint. The amount of energy, vibrance and stage presence they brought was next level. Skillet’s been around a long time, collecting a ton of chart toppers along the way. They played banger after banger “Feel Invincible”, “Rise”, “Psycho In My Head” “Monster” and finishing with “The Resistance”.  For “Legendary” John Cooper (lead vocals, bass) made his way to the rail and had the crowd chant the chorus. On “Awake and Alive” Korey Cooper (guitar & vocals) put her guitar down and played the keyboard while cellist Tate Olsen played the cello. Olsen made his way from one side of the stage to the other, eventually making his way to the elevated platforms at the back of the stage. Korey CooperSeth Morrison (guitar) and Olsen all rotated and spent time on the risers. John Cooper stated he wrote “Hero” for his lord, Jesus Christ. Jen Ledger (drums, vocals) came down from behind the drum kit, took center stage and with J Cooper and sang her part of “Hero” while her drum tech filled in on the drums.

John Cooper shared how special the Midland Theare is for the band. They played the Midland 14 years ago with Papa Roach, and it was at that show where Tate Olsen met his now wife. Cooper then brought Olsen’s wife and two kids on stage. Cooper also mentioned their new album coming out, Revolution. It’s all about the revolution of love and how we should be treating each other, Cooper stated. Skillet was stellar all around.

Finally, Seether took the stage.  I’d caught Seether the week before at Riff Fest in Michigan. They weren’t the headliner, so had a shortened set. With more time on stage for a co-headlining tour, I was really hoping they’d play more songs off their new album The Surface Seems So Far, but they didn’t, just “Judas Mind”.  But with that said, Seether has such a deep catalog with plenty of fan favorites, it was a vibe running through 20 years of hits. Their set was polished and everything sounded fantastic. The crowd knew all the songs and chanted along with fists in the air.

Seether and Skillet are on tour through mid-October with Tim Montana and Royale Lynn. There’s a little something for everyone. Take in a show, listen to the newcomers and reminisce with some veteran rockers.
