CONCERT REVIEW: Ministry + Death Grips @ Oak Music Hall in Houston

The Ministry and Death Grips tour descended on White Oak Music Hall in Houston, Texas. Nov, 10th 2017 to a sold out house of rabid fans. Even MTV News was spotted interviewing the fans in line to the venue.

Death Grips, an experimental hip-hop band from Sacramento, came out into the darkness on stage to cheers. Their only lighting being the bright green LEDs that glowed out from their instruments. Vocalist MC Ride had what appeared to be in essence plastic brass knuckles that shot frickin laser beams out into the frenzied crowd. Talented keyboardist Andy Morin glowed with his row of LEDs and their beast of a drummer Zach Hill had his lighting mounted all around him illuminating his powerful performance. They gave an engaging and animated show and their crowd surfing and moshing fans showed their devotion to the well loved trio. Their set included songs “Lock Your Doors”, “80808” and “Inanimate Sensation”.  You can watch their newest self released track “Steroids (Crouching Tiger Hidden Gabber)” right here:

Ministry was up next. The large screen behind them, enormous inflated chickens that more than resembled Trump with Anti Nazi symbols emblazoned on their fat bellies immediately gave the impression we were all in for a politically charged roller coaster ride, but with their 14th album titled “AMERIKKKANT” set to release in 2018 and tracks such as “Antifa” one does not question which side of the political table Uncle Al sits on. They are well known for their tireless work ethic and long hours of rehearsals. This can be heard and seen during their well oiled machine of a performance. Opening with “Punch In The Face” off their release “From Beer To Eternity” they immediately captured the audience’s attention. Debuting to Houston the anthemic single “Antifa” that has been met with controversy was well received. Al took the time to talk to the audience about Houston. Spoke about how this town has survived and thrived with advent of Hurricane Harvey and then the glory of The Astros as well as how much fun our town is to play made Houston one of their favorite stops. It turned a sold out show into an intimate get together for a few moments. “Just One Fix” and “So, What” had the crowds singing along. The closing song a cover of Devo’s “Gates Of Steel”  was a fun end to what was an intense and thought provoking  show.
