May 29, 2019 marked the return to Omaha for Nashville Pussy at Lookout Lounge, along with Guitar Wolf, The Turbo A.C.’s and Saints of Lust. The Nashville Pussy was the band I have been looking forward to seeing them again.
Kicking off was Omaha’s Saints of Lust, a rock band that is combining of punk, metal, pop and 70s influenced. I have seen their show a multi of times for some years; knew that bassist Greg Turner’s wife photographer/band merch manager Brenda loved Nashville Pussy as much as I did. This was a great way to start the evening.
Up next was New York City’s own punk rock band The Turbo A.C.’s. At the beginning of their show, the crowd was modest to put it best and people seemed a bit hesitant to join in on the fun of group chants and fist pumps, The Turbo A.C.’s didn’t let anything hold them back and played the sleepy Wednesday night show like it was their biggest show to date, a short time later more fans showed their appreciation toward A.C.’s performance on the stage. Since the mid 1990s, The Turbo A.C.’s have been providing some of the best rock n’ roll (on the verge of punk) music, have released eight albums, including their latest Radiation and a few EPs. The band’s lineup hasn’t changed very much over the years. Be sure to check them out when you can.
Next was Guitar Wolf, NP’s direct opener. Oh they blew me away. Formed in Nagasaki, Japan in 1987, Guitar Wolf’s musical growth rate over a period of 15 albums later, including their latest LOVE&JETT which released earlier this year. Yet performed like The Ramones before them, they wore black jackets and pants; and future-like sunglasses. They kicked off with a lot of bass and drums, a very moment later each member drank a tall beer down into their throat non-stop, and the crowd went crazy as there was some moshing went on behind me while I shot the show. During the middle of their set of the evening, bassist Gotz, aka Bass Wolf, dived into the crowd, but ended landing on the floor, got up, went back onto the stage, did it again once more time, finally surfed over the crowd’s heads. They played loud; played hard, tortured their guitars hard, tore up some nylon strings, while drummer Toru, aka Drum Wolf, hit the skins hard and fast, their faces and chests sweated profoundly with no towels nearby until ended of the set. That’s what the punk rock performance is all about. Their performance was mind-blowing for a whole crowd to see! Take my word! Go see them if they come near you.
Finally, it was Nashville Pussy‘s turn to hit the stage. This was my second time seeing them live show, first was at The Waiting Room Lounge at the historic Benson downtown in Omaha, Nebraska nearly four years ago, as they are one of my favorites that are not too miss.
Nashville Pussy is an American rock & roll band from Atlanta, Georgia, has been kicking ass since 1997, creating a white-thrash blend of AC/DC meets Lynyrd Skynyrd with a dash of ’70 Nugent, Nashville Pussy was formed by the husband-and-wife team vocalist and guitarist Blaine Cartwright and lead guitarist Ruyter Suys, along with bassist Bonnie Buitrago and the newest drummer Ben Thomas, are currently in supporting of their latest 9th full-studio album Pleased To Eat You.
On the set, Nashville Pussy performed 6 new songs out of 14 including their recent hit ‘She Keeps Me Coming and I Keep Going Back’, ‘We Want A War’ and ‘Go Home And Die’, so really good stuff for the band but also for the audience. Nashville Pussy kicked off the show with their classic ‘Pussy Time’, off from their 2005 album Get Some!, started by like this – “Well alright! Who wants some Pussy? We do! Then get off your butt, you gotta come with me, gotta go, go, go, go, go, go, go” … that set the crowd on fire. There was some intense activities went on behind me as some people started shoving to each other harder.
Rutyer Suys was an explosion of crazy blond curls from the first riff, an unstoppable energy ball of relentless guitar. To her right, Blaine Cartwright led the sing along with a trucker cap, he may be the frontman, but his wife Suys is the band’s superstar, a constantly moving human whirlwind and one sensational lead guitar player which I have always enjoyed watching her riffed the old Gibson SG guitar.
The break before the encore was just long enough for everyone to catch their breath, while their drummer Ben Thomas doing his killer drum solo, then Nashville Pussy came back to wrap up the night with last three of ‘Strutting Cock’, ‘Till the Meat Falls Off The Bone’ and finally finished by ‘Go Motherfucker Go’. Capping off high-energy performance of pure rock ‘n’ roll, Nashville Pussy are easily one of the best live bands kicking around.
After the show ended, Ruyter hung out with some fans and that was when I had an opportunity having her and others’ signatures on my Pleased To Eat You vinyl LP cover I bought on the first day its released. What a night for me and everyone else who came to see them. Their US tour ended a couple days after this. They’re currently on break and will start their massive shows, including some well-known festivals, across the Europe later this month.
A huge thanks to Black Heart Booking for bringing them back to Omaha.
