JESS BECK | Go Venue Magazine
The first time I heard Underoath was in 2004 when their second album, They’re Only Chasing Safety, was released. It was this album that would open the doorway for heavier sound for me, so to catch them 20 years later celebrating this very album was, to say the least, very special for me.
The last time I caught Underoath was in 2022 at the SoWhat?! Music Festival.
In between, I caught Aaron Gillespie’s side project The Almost earlier this year.
Now it’s back to the full lineup – and holy fuck did they put on a great show! Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at Myth Live was a fantastic night, and certainly one to remember. Between the lights, the screaming, the explosive energy…it was balls to the wall for each moment of this packed venue!
P.O.S. opened the show, and I think he was having some technical issues with the mic because the vocals were very muted, but it’s always nice to have a local open up a show!
Static Dress followed, and they sounded very similar to Underoath’s early work, so it made sense to have them on this bill. Hailing from the U.K., these folks put on one hell of a show! I’d be sure to catch them if you can on this tour – their visuals are pretty wild, even if the lighting isn’t all that great.
Underoath kicked off with pitch black and a faint melody playing in the background. Gillespie took a seat on a sofa positioned in the middle of the stage, a solitary lamp illuminating him from behind. The audience began singing “Some Will Seek Forgiveness, Others Escape,” and as the song progressed, different lamps came on to illuminate the other members taking the stage.
By the end of that song, all the members, save Spencer Chamberlain, were on the stage and ready to continue to blast our ear holes full of nostalgia. He entered, and walked on to the stage to probably the most obnoxious roars from any audience I’ve had the privilege to share a venue with. Spencer is a true showman, moving all over the stage AND moving all over the audience while at the same time belting out the lyrics to some of their most iconic tracks to date, including “Young and Aspiring,” to their new track “Teeth.”
The best moment of the night that still gives me chills was when the crowd sang back the bridge to “It’s Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door” by harmonizing in the ominous lyrics, “Drowning in my sleep, I’m drowning in my sleep.” It felt very much like the chorus that Amity Affliction has in a number of their tracks, and it was such an incredible moment!
As always, a huge shout-out to the staff at Myth Live! Y’all work hard to keep these safe and fun concerts coming, so from the front door humans checking ID’s to the bar staff, to the people that help keep the bathrooms clean, thank you for all that you do! Let’s remember to keep wearing deodorant to shows, to keep being excellent to one another, and we’ll see ya at the next show!
