The Bourbon Theatre in downtown Lincoln, Nebraska was the place to be Saturday, August 10 as Samantha Fish brought her talented guitar-playing skills to the stage. The Bourbon was packed for a Saturday night blues show.
The night’s opening act was Sgt. Splendor, a New York duo. Kate Vargas and Eric McFadden are electric when they perform together. Vargas’s vocals complement McFadden’s guitar so well. I was very impressed that they didn’t need any backing tracks or any other musicians to join them on stage. It was pure, natural musical camaraderie. McFadden’s guitar playing was very amazing and technical, I was blown away by it. Check out their latest album, Death of the Hoochie Koo.
Kansas City’s own Samantha Fish was ready for the Bourbon stage. I was unfamiliar with her work heading into this concert, as I wanted to be as fresh as I could. Suffice it to say, I was impressed by her artistry. Her guitar playing was soulful and exquisite. And her voice was incredible to hear, as well. She had an amazing band backing her, shout out to her keyboard player, he was killing it throughout her set. She opened her set with a ripping cover of MC5’s “Kick Out the Jams”. It was a much older crowd than I was anticipating, but they were all having a great time, moving and grooving. Fish would go on these long, extended guitar solos that were incredible and impressive. She even shouted out the Zoo Bar in downtown Lincoln, which makes sense since she’s from KC, over course she would play there a handful of times in the past. She did an encore and for the final performance, brought out Sgt. Splendor for a little jam. It was a fun night for live music in downtown Lincoln for all that went. Be sure to check out her latest Grammy-nominated album, Death Wish Blues.
